On our way back to Vermont with a trailer full of sheep. The 2. 7 EcoBoost isn’t nearly so Eco with 5000 pounds of devestatingly un-aerodynamic trailer behind it... Currently averaging 11. 8mpg... But it does move that mass without complaint. It’s working, but it still accelerates rather impressively and just makes it hard to believe it’s a small V6...

modify the trailer so it’s aerodynamic?

Seriously considering taking the cutoff wheel and welder to it. We don’t need the height for horses, we could easily knock two feet off and still have plenty of headroom for sheep. Our just sculpt the front end a bit...

11.8 is actually pretty good for that much weight.

Especially in a pickup with no cap (I think). The trailer sounds really tall so it’s not getting the full benefit of the draft.

That sounds about right. Towing the boat (call it 6000-6500lbs going down the road, depending on fuel level and the amount of gear inside), my 2.7 got 12.5mpg towing between 75-80mph in calm wind conditions and around 9mph into a 20-30mph headwind at the same speeds. I was impressed by those results. The only other tow vehicle that’s pulled this boat and ever returned double digit mileage was my 2002 F-250 with a 7.3l powerstroke.

The other 8 tow vehicles that we’ve pulled this boat with over the years(which ranged from a 2nd gen Ford Explorer with the 5.0 to a GMC 3500 dually with a 8.1l vortec) all returned between 4 to 7mpg, with the smaller trucks only able to tow in 65mph range due to stability and none of the other gas powered trucks able to maintain 75+mph climbing large canyons or mountain passes.

Yeah, it’s pretty impressive. We’ve never towed this much weight such a long distance before, so its a new experience for us, but the power reserve is seriously surprising.

It could be worse.

Kinja'd!!!

It Gets 10mpg with a tailwind, 7 with a headwind. the trailer ~1000lbs makes no difference.
